Why students of International Relations are divested of College Lectureship? Public Service Commission needs to reconsider the situation.
Students of International Relations, who have deep understanding of political, economic and environmental changes taking place in the world, are being ignored in several key departments of Pakistan and neither the government nor the departments, where the students of International Relations could provide their services for country’s better future, are paying attention to this issue. One aspect of this issue is the deprivation of International Relations students of Sindh from lectureship of colleges. Although the subject is being taught in colleges at B.A and M.A level but Sindh Public Service Commission does not announce any vacancy in International Relations. In addition to this, students who apply for lectureships on political science’s vacancies are being rejected by saying that Master in International Relations is not acceptable for posts of political science but on the other hand, a person having Master in political science teaches I.R due to which students of International Relations are disgruntled and dissatisfied over this injustice. A survey conducted at Department of International Relations in University of Karachi in this regard students asked the ruling elite, Sindh Public Service Commission and other relevant authorities to give attention to this issue and said that there is a need to announce posts not only for lectureships in colleges but also in department of foreign affairs, for students of International Relations and a specific quota should be fixed for them in departments related to foreign affairs because students of International relations view the world from a different view, the way no one else can see, therefore, in order to make a strong and effective foreign policy for the country, a specific quota should be fixed for students of International Relations so that they can provide their services for the country. A student named Ahmed said “Social Sciences’ students, especially those of International relations, are being considered as ‘elite students’ all over the world because their knowledge will ensure a country respect and honor and will be making policies for the country in future but its opposite in our country. Those studying International Relations not only have deep understanding of international issues but also have keen eye over regional, local, defense, economic and environmental issues”. Another student, on condition of anonymity, told that she had suffered due to Sindh Public Service Commission’s rules, based on injustice, and is now doing M.Phil. She told that she had applied for political science’s lectureship on vacancy announced by Sindh Public Service Commission and had also cleared the test but she was rejected by the Commission and was sent a notice which stated that she had a Master degree in International Relations which was not acceptable for post of lecturer for political science. She asked “who is teaching International Relations in B.A. and M.A. then? “ Similarly, other students also expressed their dissatisfaction. Some students were of the view that there are several issues for students who want to make education as their career because there is a condition of M.Phil. for teaching at University level and there is no vacancy for International Relations in colleges. They demanded H.E.C, Public Service Commission and other relevant departments to play their roles in this regard. The writer is of the opinion that people having International relations’ background can be adjusted on vacancies for political science because international relations is a part of political science. Those who want to pursue their career in education could be hired as lecturer of International Relations under Political Science otherwise separate vacancies should be announced for them. The way people having backgrounds other than International Relations are adjusted on vacancies for International relations similar laws could be made for students of International Relations.
